About Brett

I’ve been drawing for about as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is of my dad drawing a picture of a house with a large tree next to it. As far as I can recall, it’s the only drawing I ever saw him do. To me, turning a few basic lines into a picture seemed like some kind of magic trick. So day after day, for several weeks, I made him draw the same house and tree over and over. To be honest, turning lines into art still feels a bit like magic and attempting to perform that trick myself in new ways has been a fundamental part of my life ever since.

Currently, my goal is to translate the energies we experience in daily life through two contemporary bodies of work— landscapes exploring the surroundings as our senses react to them and abstract drawings interpreting our emotions as we internalize them. I like to think of it as viewing the world with both my inside eye and my outside eye. It also allows me to share both my love of the outdoors and my more than 25 years experience as a graphic designer.

I’m pleased to have been awarded a Fellowship by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for 2010-11, and my work can be found in private and corporate collections in the United States, England and France. I am an honors graduate of Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.

A native of South Bend, Indiana and raised in Vero Beach, Florida, currently I find inspiration at the foot of Mason's Knob with his wife, two cats, a dog, and abundant wildlife in Roanoke, Virginia.
