| January 21. I have been awarded a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts 2010-11 Professional Fellowship. The Fellowship Program supports Virginia's outstanding professional artists and art students by offering financial aid to pursue education or advance careers in the visual arts. September 18. My abstract works on paper, "Ash" and "Family Cabinet" have been awards 1st and 2nd place for Minimalism and 2nd place for Innovative from the American Art Awards. My work also received recognition in the Abstract and Charcoal/Ink/Pencil catagories. Work was judged by 25 galleries from 25 different states in an online competion. The American Art Awards are organized by Thom Bierdz and based in Los Angles, California.

June 1, 2009. I'm happy to announce that I am the recipient of the 2009 Sidewalk Art Show's Drawing/Original Printmaking Award. The show, held in Roanoke, VA is now in it's 51st year and had more than 160 artists participating. The weather and crowds were terrific for the weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the show.

March 27, 2009. July will see the premier of a new landscape series: "Roadside Distractions, Driving the I-81 Corridor" at Nelson Gallery, Lexington, VA. Before becoming a member of the Nelson Gallery, I was an entrant in their 9th Annual Juried show in 2008. Winning the Members Choice award provided a one person show in July of this year. February 6, 2009. "Temptation" wins Best In Show at the Roanoke Valley SPCA's Best in Show. His painting will be featured on the cover of the 2010 RVSPCA calendar. The opening event was held at The Taubman Museum in Roanoke. Ali Cat, who posed for the painting is now claiming Supermodel status.
January 18, 2009. Thanks to Bobbi Hoffman for taking the time to come and visit my studio and writing such a nice story in Valley Business Front, the January, '09 issue. To not scare her away, I cleaned up quite a bit before her arrival so she would at least have a chair to sit in. Read the story on page 57.
January 16, 2009. The members of The Nelson Gallery in Lexington, Virginia has kindly offered me the opportunity to join their gallery. I've accepted of course. There a great bunch of people and I look forward to working and sharing wall space with them starting this February. My landscape show is still scheduled there for July.
January, 2009. Happy New Year! Planning for 2009 is underway. I'll be posting more info about upcoming events including my landscape show at the Nelson Gallery in July, outdoor shows, and my first Open House this fall. November 7, 2008. Of Nature and Necessity, a two person show with Anna Velkoff Freeman opens today at the Selden Gallery, Norfolk, VA. The show includes 34 abstract drawings and a large mixed media work Brett has created this year, matched with Anna's ceramic pieces. Opening Reception is Friday, November 14, at 5 PM with a gallery talk Friday, November 21, at 6:30 PM. The Selden Gallery is on the 2nd floor of the Selden Arcade above the Plume Street entrance. August 11, 2008. The ink and black tea drawing titled Ash has been accepted for the 29th Annual Roanoke City Art Show. 43 pieces were selected from 440 entires. The show opens September 25th, 2nd floor, Center in the Square, Downtown Roanoke.

McGuffey Art Center, Charlottesville. Show begins Friday, September 5th, with a public reception from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
July 27, 2008. Beginning on Art By Night August 8, 2008, Cheshire Gallery on Campbell Avenue in downtown Roanoke, VA will display 48 linear feet of my latest works. I will will be the featured artist through August of 2008. In watercolor, ink, acrylic and mixed media, these new works explore themes of music, nature, and personal exploration. Come by and discuss these new works with Brett during Art By Night between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Show continues through the month of August.

June 9, 2008. Winner, mixed media award at Art Museum of Western Virginia's 50th Annual Sidewalk Art Show. Cameron Kitchin, executive director of the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia was this year's Judge. Mr. Kitchin awarded Brett the honorable mention in the mixed media catagory. See a sample of works from the show. Thank you to everyone who braved the heat and came out to see the show. Hope no major sunburns resulted for anyone.

March 7, 2008. Good as Gold, an acrylic painting on canvas can be seen in the front window of Nelson Fine Arts Gallery for today's opening of Virginia Rivers and Streams, an invitational show, March 7th to March 31, 2008.
January 28, 2008. Nest 2, an ink and watercolor work will be included in the upcoming 20" x 20" x 20" : A National Compact Competition, at Louisiana State University in March, 2008. The show will run from March 16 through April 4, 2008 at the LSU Student Union Gallery.
